Since April 2019, new “dictator” Khalifa Haftar has launched massive attacks on the Libyan capital seeking to control and overthrow the government of Prime Minister Fayez Al Sarraj.

The fighting has led to another crisis, claimed at least 1,000 lives and displaced tens of thousands of people.

Libya has been torn by violence and division since long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed in 2011.

The UN Security Council “expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Libya, and called on the parties to allow full access for humanitarian agencies. [ads2]

“Through the follow-ups of the Amazigh Supreme Council to the recent and serious developments of the attacks on the capital Tripoli from the so-called “dignity forces”. The Amazigh Supreme council of Libya declares to the international and local opinion the Following:

1. We completely reject any attempt of a military coup against the civilian state and imposing a political reality by the force of arms. Such actions undermine the political process, the peaceful course and threaten the state’s civilian life.

2. We are surprised at the position of the UNSMIL, for not being neutral, as we hold them the legal and ethical responsibility for the consequences of this unilateral war and the grave consequences that threaten the safety of defenseless civilians.

3. We call upon all Libyans to renounce violence, resort to dialogue, avoid bloodshed and maintain social peace.”

Below are statements released by Amazigh Supreme Council of Libya regarding boycotting of the constitutional rewrite

Tripoli, July 24, 2018

In reference to the declaration of the Amazigh Supreme Council of Libya regarding boycott of the constitutional process;
We affirm that we continue our commitment to apply the concept of “We do not recognize those who do not recognize us”.

Furthermore, to safeguard the sacrifices of our heroes whom gave their lives to pave the way for us to gain our legitimate rights; and for the persistence and courage of the Amazigh people, and their full awareness of their cause and future;
The Amazigh Supreme Council of Libya urges all Amazigh citizens to boycott the so called referendum over a racist unjust draft constitution.
We shall not recognize the constitution resulting from this referendum, for it is an illegitimate document due to its violation to local laws and international conventions and treaties ratified by Libya.

We hold responsible; the so called the Comittee of 58, House of Representatives, High State Council, UNSMIL and everyone supporting this exclusionist project; for the resulting lack of unity and instability in Libya, for they went on with applying procedures to issue a referendum, fully ignoring the lack of consensus with the Amazigh people as a genuine partner in constructing Libya.

We announce that the forthcoming phase will be a beginning of a new political and social rift. It will be a turning point in the Amazigh political mechanisms, and this clear rejection of the Amazigh people as a genuine partner will force us to reciprocate such treatment.

Tifinagh, the oldest traditional writing system of the Amazigh people of North Africa continues to expand across North Africa.

It took a long time but, it’s official, now drive through parts of Zuwarah (ⵜⴰⵎⵓⵔⵜ ⵏ ⵡⴰⵜ ⵡⵉⵍⵍⵓⵍ Tamurt n Wat Willul), in northwestern Libya, and you may be surprised that you’ll find streets name signs in Tamazight Language written in Tifinagh alphabet.

It’s been a long time coming, but it seems increasing demand for implementation of Tamazight’s official status in recent past years by the Libyan people has finally kicked some bigwigs into action.

This project aimed to revitalize Tifinagh and changes will also include cities/towns names, and tourism destinations, including historic and natural sites across Zuwarah and entire Libya in future.

“Languages Matter!”

Tamazight language matters!

Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

Among the list of recommendations made to the Member States by the declartion of this International day one reads:

(a) create the conditions for a social, intellectual and media environment of an international character which is conducive to linguistic pluralism;

(b) promote, through multilingual education, democratic access to knowledge for all citizens, whatever their mother tongue, and build linguistic pluralism; strategies to achieve these goals.

The 21st of February is celebrated as World Mother Tongue Day. The UNESCO, which hopes to make people conscious of the importance of the mother tongue, declares in its latest publication Education in a Multilingual World (2003), that the most suitable language for teaching basic concepts to children is the mother tongue.

Indeed, the UNESCO declared this as early as 1953 in its report The Use of Vernacular Languages in Education. Yet, as the world modernized, the smaller and weaker mother tongues started dying. The schooling system, the media and the jobs all demanded the languages of power – the languages used in the domains of power i.e. administration, government, military, commerce, education, media etc. – which had to be learned by people in their own interest. As globalization increases, languages die.

The 21st of February reminds us that, despite this inequality of power between our mother tongues and the languages of power, we must not give up hope. We must be conscious of the significance of our mother tongues, which give us identity; which are repositories of culture and which, in the final analysis, make us what we are.

Tripoli – Libya | In accordance with the resolutions of the local governments of the Tamazight speaking regions in year 2012 AD, regarding Amazigh New Year Holiday; And in reference to;

– The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
– Resolution of the Amazigh Supreme Council number 3, of year 2013 AD, regarding designating the first day of the Amazigh Year as a public holiday.
– Article 17 of the bylaw of the Libyan Labour Law number 12, of year 2010, regarding observing public holidays in the next working day if they fall on a weekend.
– General National Congress law number 18, of year 2013.

The Amazigh Supreme Council announces that the second day of the Amazigh year 2968, that coincides with 14/01/2018 AD, is a public holiday in all areas of local governments that are members of the council, in observance of the first day of the Amazigh Year that falls this year on the weekend.
On this occasion, the Amazigh Supreme Council wishs you a happy holiday, and wishes that year 2968 would be a year marked by happiness, stability and prosperity to all our people.

As part of the Amazigh New Year’s celebrations, At-Welol Movement in collaboration with other civil society organization based in Zuwarah in Libya, organizing a festival and many cultural activities to celebrate the coming of the new year as well as to revive the tradition of holding the Amazigh new year’s tradition in Libya . The event will be held on on Friday, January 12th at 06:00PMin the closed hall of Aljazerah Sports Club in Zuwarah in northwestern Libya.

Furthermore, the recent kidnapping, torture, and threat of murder in the foothills of Nafusa Mountain, of an Ibadi imam and his associate of the town of Tendmira, on the bases of their Ibadi affiliation, by terrorist militias of the so called Dignity Operation. On those accounts, ASC declares that;

1- The so called Arab Army and its commander, had become a direct threat to the Amazigh people in Libya, due to the stance of the Amazigh people that rejects the return of dictatorial military rule and rejects the terrorist ideology.

2- ASC calls the international community to assume their legal responsibility on protecting the Amazigh civilians in Libya, in accordance with the international treaties and conventions signed by the state of Libya.

3- ASC calls all Libyans to refuse and reject all forms of racial and religious hatred, and their resulting incitement of conflicts and threat to the social peace in Libya.

4- ASC calls all the Amazigh people to be aware of grave threats to the security situation, the plots planned by certain racists and their attempts to implant conflict among our people. Furthermore, we urge you to enforce your positions against those plots threatening our region‘s security and stability.

Therefore, we, as one of the Indigenous Peoples of Africa, declare to the local and international opinion;

1. While ASC emphasizes on the necessity of combating illegal immigration alongside the commitment of the state to respect the human rights of the migrants; ASC reminds that Libya is located in the African continent, and has deeply rooted historical and cultural ties with its African brothers and sisters.
2. . ASC emphasizes that Libya is a founding and a prominent member of the African Union. The lack of enabling the role of the African Union in the Libyan situation, is one of the factors that lead to the lack of stability in Libya. Which allowed the interference in Libyan issues by countries that have no regional ties with Libya and are not concerned with the interest of Libyans.

The Amazigh Supreme Council urges the international community to deal with Libya as an independent, African, Mediterranean, multi lingual and multiethnic state, built on the basis of plurality, and not as a state of one ethnic group.
