The hero’s journey monomyth is at the core of stories worldwide among indigenous peoples, the ancients, and our modern society, In this video The Riddle of the Tuareg” that is drawn from Bernie Taylor’s book “Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero” he explores a deeper root for this mono myth by looking at how hunter-gatherers viewed themselves within the natural and spiritual worlds through Paleolithic cave art from 40,000 years ago.

Author and naturalist Taylor proposes that select cave paintings are fundamental pieces in the human journey to self-realization, the foundation of written language, and a record of biological knowledge that irrevocably impacted some of the artistic styles, religious practices, and stories that are still with us.

Taylor addresses a profound archaeological elephant in the room by opening up an uncharted place in our history, which points to the cultural ancestors of mankind in the Amazigh culture.

Tifinegh Classes: Preserving Languages and Saving Cultures https://amazighworldnews.com/tifinegh-classes-preserving-languages-and-saving-cultures/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tifinegh-classes-preserving-languages-and-saving-cultures https://amazighworldnews.com/tifinegh-classes-preserving-languages-and-saving-cultures/#respond Wed, 22 Feb 2017 21:16:04 +0000 http://www.amazighworldnews.com/?p=592 Tifinegh, continues to be transmitted to children as a means of preserving Amazigh/Tuareg identity, Some two-thirds of the estimated 1.5 million Tuareg living in Niger use their traditional language, Tamacheq, on a daily basis. The unusual script is rarely used nowadays in Niger. This project aimed to revitalize Tifinagh.

[ads1]

Among the earliest Tifinagh inscriptions found in North Africa are those found inscribed on rocks and painted in cave shelters (Wadi Takdhalt and Matkhandoush). Although the dating of the script was based on the earliest inscriptions found in some coastal areas, there is no comprehensive study to catalogue and date the prehistoric collection found in cave art across the Sahara. Most if not all the inscriptions found so far are yet to be deciphered. As the dating of many of these rock engravings and paintings themselves is also questionable, the age of Tifinagh is not conclusive and may not be known for some time.

[ads1]

Most foreign estimates suggest the script to be around 3000 years old, primarily based on the fact that the Phoenicians arrived in North Africa around that time, and hence the widely accepted conclusion that the name Ti-finagh itself was derived from the word Phoniq.

It took a long time but, it’s official, now drive through parts of Agadez streets, the largest city in central Niger, and you may be surprised that you’ll find streets name signs in Tamazight Language written in Tifinagh alphabet.

It’s been a long time coming, but it seems increasing demand for implementation of Tamazight’s official status in recent past years by the Tuareg people of Niger has finally kicked some bigwigs into action.

This project aimed to revitalize Tifinagh and changes will also include cities/towns names, and tourism destinations, including historic and natural sites across Agadez and entire Niger in future.

Teneghelt

One of the things that the nomadic Amazigh Tuareg are famous for are their “crosses”, called ‘Teneghelt’ in their Amazigh dialect of Tamasheq.

There are officially 21 crosses, with each design indicating the city/town of origin of the individual wearing it. Strictly made of silver, in line with Islamic teachings, the designs are a beautiful union of the male and female symbols.

The origin of these crosses is disputed, but they are generally thought to be worn as a talisman to protect from the evil eye. Traditionally, they are handed down from father to son at puberty; a symbolic reminder of their nomadic Tuareg lifestyle and origins.
