[dropcap]O[/dropcap]nce again, the Local authorities in the Errachidia in southeast Morocco, refuses to register a little girl with an Amazigh first name ” Silya “. Ironically, Silya has already been registered by the civil administration of the city of Taroudant, in southern Morocco. The officer at the office of the Department of Civil Status argued that the first name in question is not authorized.

The Amazigh World News team and the Amazigh community in the USA is outraged by this discriminatory behavior and urge the Moroccan officials to make an end of these type of excessive power harassment and to cancel “the listing of authorized first names” which is nothing less than a discriminatory tool against Moroccan Amazighs.[ads1]

The incident sparked a wave of demonstrations in Morocco’s neglected Rif region, demanding demanding jobs, funding for the impoverished area and an end to alleged government corruption.

On the other hand, Morocco police have arrested more than 270 people over the Rif protests, many of them arbitrarily, including peaceful activists and some journalists. The overwhelming majority are in detention, and many have already been sentenced to prison terms for protest-related charges. At least 50 are currently being investigated on state-security charges. Some could face could face death penalty.[ads1]

A journalist of the British daily The Guardian, Saeed Kamali Dehghan, was expelled on Thursday (September 28th) by the Moroccan authorities while he was reported in the town of Al-Hoceima, a region in the north of the kingdom shaken since almost a year by a vast movement of popular protest know as “Hirak”.

The British newspaper said after he landed in London; “Saeed Kamali Dehghan is safe and well and has returned to London, We are surprised that a respected Guardian correspondent reporting in Morocco was told to leave the country, and we are looking into the circumstances in more detail,” The Guardian said in a statement.

On the other hand, Morocco’s communication minister said on Friday that a journalist for Britain’s newspaper was expelled because he had been working in a tense region of the country without a permit.
