Agadir – After the end of their volunteering work of building a semi-paved road in the suburbs of Taroudant, southeastern Morocco, the Belgian volunteers wanted a traditional Amazigh dress to take a picture with before their departure.
An initiative that sparks big controversy in Morocco when a parliamentary member of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) Ali El Asri, criticized the group for wearing inappropriate clothing , and believed the group’s volunteer initiative had an ulterior motive.
As a result of the threats, the Belgian organization “Bouworde” has chosen to cancel its upcoming volunteering projects that lasted more than 15 years, sending groups of young volunteers from Belgium to help on infrastructure projects like water canals, schools, and a women’s center in the area.
According to the organization’s press release yesterday, Bouworde sought advice from the Belgian Embassy in Rabat. [ads2]
