Algiers – Algerian authorities have arrested scores of pro-democracy movement activists since September 2019. Many remain detained for protesting peacefully or for very vague charges such as “harming national unity” and “undermining the morale of the army.”

The authorities should immediately and unconditionally release the peaceful activists and respect the rights to free speech and assembly of all Algerians.

The organization is calling on the Algerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all protesters who were sentenced for 6 months in prison and release all who remain in detention and to respect and protect the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly during today’s demonstrations.

In particular they should refrain from harassing, intimidating, arresting or prosecuting anyone simply for carrying the Amazigh flag or having it in their possession.
