Mohamed Amezyan, also known as Cherif Muhand Amezyan, left an indelible mark on Rif history through his leadership in the Rif resistance against Spanish occupation. His courage, determination, and strategic prowess earned him respect and admiration among his people and struck fear into the hearts of Spanish colonial forces.
Operating primarily in the eastern Rif region near Nador province, Amezyan led his Imjahden warriors in numerous battles against the Spanish army. His military acumen and the unwavering resolve of his fighters resulted in significant defeats for the colonial forces, inflicting humiliating losses upon them.
Tragically, Amezyan met his end in a battle on May 15, 1912, when he was killed by Spanish colonial troops. However, his legacy endured, inspiring future generations to continue the struggle for freedom and independence.
After his death, Amezyan’s body was transported to Melilla, where it was later returned to his brothers for burial in the cemetery of his hometown, Segangan city, near Nador. His final resting place became a symbol of resistance and a pilgrimage site for those who sought to honor his memory and carry on his fight for justice and sovereignty.
