Idir, Amazigh Music Legend, Dies at 70 in Paris

Idir, Iconic Kabyle and Amazigh singer of world renown

It is with great sadness that we learn today of the passing of Hamid Cheriet better known as Idir today in Paris at the age of 71 after a long battle with lung cancer.

Born in 1949 in Kabylie, in the village of Ait Lahcen, is one of the most well known singers and ambassador of the Kabyle and the Amazigh music in the world.

His first album A Vava Inouva came out in 1976, and the song “A Vava Inouva” was translated into seven languages. After notable success, Idir wrote and recorded his second album Ay Arrac Negh (meaning To our children) in 1979.

Idir was a truly wonderful advocate for the Amazigh cause and has always been a source of inspiration for all Amazigh all over the world and his continuous efforts to raise awareness within the community of issues faced by Amazigh people in North Africa.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Idir’s family, friends and fans all around the world. Rest in peace legend.
