Rabat – The Finance and Economic Development Committee at Morocco house of representatives has blocked earlier this week the amendment of a draft law that would allow Bank Al Maghrib to issue the next series of banknotes using Tifinagh, the native writing system of the Amazigh language.
The decision has sparked anger among the Amazigh community describing it as a continuing acts of discrimination against the Amazigh culture and also violate the constitution, which names Tamazight as an official language in the nation back on 2011.
The amendment, which was adopted by the House of Councillors last week, was strongly opposed by the government majority, led by the Islamic Justice and Development Party (PJD), as well as the Istiqlal Party.
