The Parliament of Morocco is getting set to include real-time interpretations of native Amazigh language during parliamentary sessions.
Rachid Talbi El Alami, the Speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives, announced on Friday that real-time Amazigh language interpretation will be featured in future sessions starting April 11.
The interpretation will be offered throughout the plenary and weekly sessions devoted to Q&A sessions, as well as the monthly session on general policy, which will be led by the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
The government of Akhannouch -who’s also of Amazigh origins- has long declared its desire to make up for the country’s tardiness in officially recognizing the Amazigh language. It took approximately eight years for Morocco to establish a statute that institutionalized Tamazight since 2011.
The government intends to establish a state-funded special fund for the Amazigh language dedicated to academic studies on the Amazigh culture and using Tifinagh on public signs to ultimately ensure that the Amazigh culture is recognized as a vital element of Moroccan identity across the country.
