Researchers in Algeria have spotted the Saharan cheetah in the Ahaggar region near Tamanrasset for the first time in 15 years. The Northwest African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus hecki), also known as the Saharan cheetah, is a subspecies native to the Sahara and the Sahel. It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with the population suspected to number fewer than 250 mature individuals as of 2008.
