Tripoli – The U.S. Embassy in Libya expressed its support for the Amazigh Supreme Council of Libya Friday, with a brief statement in Amazigh language using the old Tifinagh script.
Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland met virtually on June 12 with representatives of the Amazigh Supreme Council who shared their ongoing efforts to promote equal rights for Amazigh people in Libya.
The Ambassador expressed support for the activities undertaken by the Amazigh Supreme Council to promote civic participation, advocate for political and social rights, and improve educational outcomes in Libya, including such initiatives that the Council has undertaken in partnership with USAID partners since 2017.
The Ambassador reiterated the United States’ support for UN-led efforts to foster an inclusive political dialogue among the Libyan people, and emphasized that such efforts can only be successful and legitimate with the meaningful participation of Libya’s indigenous and ethnic groups, including Amazigh, Tebu, and Tuareg Libyans.
