On the occasion of the Amazigh spring, the present met the past on Saturday, March 27th — with hopes that the future will be impacted, a new statue of Amazigh king Aksel was erected at ‘Takhelidjt At Vuyucef village near Tizi-Ouzou in Kabylie.
king Aksel -died c. 688 CE- was a famous Amazigh freedom fighter who is known for prosecuting an effective Amazigh military resistance against the Arab conquest of North Africa in the 680s.
Dozens of people attended the unveiling, as well as to show support to the work done by artist Arezki Nait Amara, following the vandalism of the statue after discovering its head had been sawed off.
