Mali and Algeria Reopen Airspace as Azawad Conflict Still Shadows Border Diplomacy

Mali and Algeria have reopened their airspace and reinstated ambassadors after a yearlong rupture, a diplomatic reset that could affect security politics around Azawad and the wider Tuareg question in the central Sahara.

The Associated Press reported that the rift began after Algeria shot down a Malian armed drone near the border in April 2025. Bamako denied violating Algerian airspace, while Algiers said it was defending its territory. The dispute grew more sensitive because Mali had already withdrawn from the 2015 Algiers-mediated peace process with northern armed groups, including movements rooted in Azawad.

The restoration of ties may ease direct state-to-state tension, but it does not remove the conflict driving much of the border insecurity. Mali’s junta continues to fight the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front, jihadist factions and other armed actors across the north. AP separately reported that Malian forces say they broke a rebel blockade around Anéfis, an area located on the strategic axis between Kidal and Gao.

For Algeria, instability in northern Mali is not only a foreign-policy issue. The conflict sits near Algeria’s southern border and intersects with long-running concerns over smuggling routes, armed movements, refugees, drones and the political symbolism of Amazigh and Tuareg self-determination claims. For Mali, restoring airspace and ambassadors may help reduce regional isolation at a moment when the junta is leaning heavily on Russian Africa Corps support.

The renewed diplomacy therefore appears practical rather than transformative. It gives both governments a channel to manage border incidents, but it leaves unresolved the central question that has shaped the region since the collapse of the Algiers framework: whether Azawad’s political grievances will be addressed through negotiation or prolonged war.
