Human Rights Watch says a Russian government-controlled Africa Corps aircraft killed eight civilians, including three children, in an airstrike on Kyrnia village in central Mali, adding new scrutiny to Mali’s Russia-backed counterinsurgency campaign.
The Associated Press reported that HRW identified the aircraft as a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 and said two munitions were dropped on the village in the Mopti region on June 15, 2026. One strike reportedly hit near the village chief’s home, killing his wife and three children; another hit near a cattle market and killed four men. AP said it could not independently verify HRW’s claims.
HRW said its findings were based on interviews, satellite imagery and a video posted by Africa Corps describing the strike as targeting a gathering of fighters. According to the rights group, JNIM fighters were present in the village but were mostly gathered elsewhere, and researchers did not find an apparent military target at the strike locations.
The report lands amid a wider escalation in Mali, where jihadist groups, Tuareg-led separatist forces, the Malian army and Russian forces are all part of a fragmented conflict. Mali’s junta turned to Russian support after breaking with France, and Africa Corps has replaced Wagner as Moscow’s formalized paramilitary presence in the country.
For Amazigh and Tuareg-focused coverage, the strike is relevant because it is part of the same conflict environment that has displaced communities across northern and central Mali and sharpened the military confrontation around Azawad. Even when a specific incident occurs outside a Tuareg-majority area, it affects the broader balance of power between the Malian state, JNIM and Tuareg-led rebel movements.
HRW called for an investigation and accountability, warning that failure to act could expose Mali’s government to complicity in war crimes. Russia’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to AP’s request for comment.
