The Associated Press is reporting that tactical coordination between the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front and the al-Qaida-linked JNIM has become a central factor in Mali’s worsening security crisis.
AP described Mali as facing one of its most serious security moments in years, with JNIM and the FLA intensifying attacks against Malian forces and Russia’s Africa Corps. The report cites large simultaneous attacks in April and a July ambush that captured or killed dozens of soldiers, adding pressure on the ruling junta.
According to AP, data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project showed fatalities from militant attacks rising by 35 percent in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2024. ACLED analyst Heni Nsaibia told AP that the groups benefit from working together because they multiply each other’s force. FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane described the relationship as tactical coordination focused on military operations.
The FLA was formed in 2024 and is the latest structure in a long line of Tuareg rebel movements seeking independence for Azawad in northern Mali. Its political roots go back to grievances over marginalization after Mali’s independence and to successive Tuareg uprisings, including the 2012 rebellion and the collapse of the Algeria-brokered peace track after Mali’s junta withdrew from the accord.
JNIM has a different ideological project and operates as one of the most powerful jihadist coalitions in the Sahel. That makes the reported coordination controversial and strategically important: it appears to be driven by a shared military enemy rather than a shared political vision for northern Mali.
For Tuareg communities, the danger is that the conflict’s military logic continues to overshadow civilian protection, local governance and the original political grievances of Azawad. The AP report points to a battlefield where alliances remain fluid, armed groups are expanding their reach and civilians are trapped between state forces, Russian-backed operations, jihadist authority and separatist claims.
