New reports from Kabylie and the diaspora are adding to concern over Algeria’s civic space, with Kabyle.com reporting recent arrests in the Bgayet region and the Association Solidarite Europe-Kabylie asking Germany to raise human-rights concerns with Algerian authorities.
Kabyle.com reported on July 29 that several militant accounts had described arrests affecting associative and union figures around Bgayet. The outlet named Mohand Arezki Bouredji, Malek Sebahi and Mabrouk Tabti, saying Sebahi had reportedly benefited from a dismissal of proceedings while Bouredji and Tabti remained under judicial supervision. Because these details are based on activist and local reporting, they should be treated carefully until court documents or independent rights groups confirm each case.
The same climate has drawn diaspora attention. SIWEL reported that ASEK, a Switzerland-based Kabyle solidarity association, wrote to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier before Germany received Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The letter urged Germany to pay attention to political prosecutions, free expression, fair-trial rights and the situation of Kabyle prisoners and activists.
These claims fit into a broader pattern already documented by international rights groups. In May, FIDH and OMCT warned that judicial and administrative pressure against CNAPESTE, an autonomous education union in Algeria, represented a serious restriction on trade-union freedom and civic space. That statement described proceedings seeking dissolution of the union and called on Algerian authorities to stop harassment of union representatives.
For Amazigh World News, the story is not simply a list of separate arrests or statements. It reflects a widening concern among Kabyle activists, unionists and diaspora organizations that political expression, independent association and cultural rights are being squeezed at the same time. The most responsible approach is to separate confirmed rights-group documentation from still-developing local arrest reports, while continuing to follow the cases as more verifiable information becomes available.
