Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the creation of a National Agency for Archaeology, aimed at researching and highlighting the country’s historical heritage, stretching from the ancient Amazigh Kingdom of Numidia to the present day.
The decision was announced following a meeting of the Council of Ministers. The new agency will have financial and administrative independence and will operate under the direct supervision of the Presidency of the Republic.
President Tebboune called for the agency to bring about a scientific breakthrough in Algerian archaeology, with particular emphasis on archaeological excavations and research into the country’s ancient history, including the Numidian period and its capital, Cirta, present-day Constantine.
