The Secretary-General of the High Commission for Tamazight HCA Mr. El Hachemi Assad announced on Thursday in Algiers during a podcast show that the new Algerian banknotes will be featuring the Amazigh language characters.

The High Commissioner stated that the project is on its final steps to be approved by the Algerian ministry of interior. The project will also include postal stamps and other official documents delivered by the state.

Tamazight had been declared in Algeria as a “national language” in 2002, but the initiative has been receiving since then huge criticism from various Amazigh sectors, who believe the change is cosmetic, insufficient and unsuited to realities on the ground.
