The murder of Mouhcine Fikri – crashed to death last Friday in Al Hoceima city after he jumped into a garbage truck trying to retrieve his confiscated merchandise – has made front page news in papers all over the world.
The ‘assassination’ of the 31 years old fish-vendor in the region of the Rif -an area long-neglected by the country’s monarchy – was on the front page of major newspapers in USA, France, Germany, Spain, England, and also featured heavily on online news websites.
In an effort to calm tensions, Morocco’s King Mohamed called for an investigation, while the country’s interior minister, Mohamed Hassad, vowed to punish those responsible. Meanwhile, the General Directorate for National Security released a statement saying that its officers were not involved in Fikri’s death.
