Statue of ‘iconic Amazigh king’ Massinissa unveiled in Algiers

Algiers – A large bronze statue of the iconic Amazigh king Massinissa, 238 bc-148 bc, has been erected in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria.

The mayor of Algiers, Abdelhakim Bettache, said that the statue, which cost about 60k, is a result of three years of work by three graduated artists from of the Algerian School of Fine Arts.

The idea for the statue came about three years ago by the Secretary-General of the high Commission for the promotion of Amazigh Culture, which it did got approved quickly by the Mayor of Algiers, Added Abdelhakim Bettache.

Massinissa was the first King of Numidia. A fearsome Amazigh fighter and negotiator, During his younger years he fought in the Second Punic War, first against the Romans as an ally of Carthage and later switching sides. With Roman support, he united the eastern and western Numidian tribes and founded the great Kingdom of Numidia.
