Kabyle journalist Mourad Ait Mimoun has not been located after being taken on Tuesday evening by plainclothes security agents in Tizi Ouzou, according to a July 9 report by Tamurt.
The outlet reported that early information pointed to questioning at the Azazga police station, while relatives and supporters said the case may be linked to social media posts about Algeria’s recent legislative elections. Tamurt said a group of lawyers in Tizi Ouzou had formed to defend Ait Mimoun but had not yet managed to confirm where he was being held.
Ait Mimoun is known in Kabylie media circles as a former local radio journalist in Tizi Ouzou and later as a host on Dzair TV, where he gave airtime to Kabyle political and cultural voices rarely seen on Algerian television. After Dzair TV closed, he continued working independently, including through social media and online programming.
The reported disappearance comes amid continuing concern over freedom of expression in Kabylie and Algeria more broadly, especially for journalists, activists, and public figures who comment on elections, political representation, and Kabyle rights. Because the available account is currently based on local reporting, the case should be followed for confirmation from lawyers, family members, rights groups, or Algerian authorities.
