Morocco’s new biometric passport is moving from a symbolic language milestone into a practical administrative test, after Moroccan media reported that some applicants have faced delays or uncertainty when submitting visa files with the redesigned document.
The new passport, approved under decree 2.26.551 and rolled out gradually from August 2026, includes Arabic, Amazigh in Tifinagh, French and English on the personal-information page. The change was welcomed by Amazigh advocates as another visible sign that Tamazight’s constitutional status is being translated into public documents.
Recent reporting by Maghreb Times says some citizens described difficulties or postponements at European consular offices, with the presence of Tifinagh text cited in the complaints. Those accounts have not yet been fully clarified by an official statement, so the issue should be read cautiously: the core question is not whether the passport is valid, but whether foreign visa-processing systems and front-desk procedures have been adequately informed about the new format.
The passport reform is broader than language. English has been added, the address field has been removed to strengthen privacy, the identity page uses more secure materials, and the electronic chip has been upgraded. Government-linked reporting has said older passports remain valid until expiry, reducing the need for immediate replacement.
For Amazigh-language policy, the episode shows the next stage of officialization. Recognition on state documents matters, but implementation also depends on coordination, training and communication with institutions outside Morocco. If consular confusion is confirmed, the solution would likely require diplomatic clarification rather than retreat from Tifinagh’s inclusion.
