Nadia Moussaoui, a Tamazight teacher in Algeria known online as Tamazight Moussaoui, has been released after receiving a one-year suspended prison sentence in a case that rights groups and Amazigh activists say illustrates the criminalization of peaceful online expression.

The court in M’Chedallah, in the wilaya of Bouira, delivered the verdict on September 22 after Moussaoui had spent more than two weeks in pretrial detention. Reports say prosecutors had requested two years in prison during a September 16 hearing.

The case began with a Facebook post linked to Algeria’s legislative elections. Human-rights reporting says she was prosecuted under the election law after commenting on or expressing a position about the vote. Defense lawyers and supporters argued that the case concerned opinion rather than any disruption of the electoral process.

Moussaoui is known for her work teaching and promoting Tamazight, including online educational content and cultural activities. That profile helped turn the case into a broader symbol for many Amazigh activists, who saw her detention as part of a pattern of pressure on Kabyle and Amazigh civic voices.

The World Amazigh Congress welcomed her release but rejected the conviction, saying she had committed no wrongdoing. SHOAA for Human Rights also criticized the use of pretrial detention in cases connected to peaceful expression online, arguing that a suspended sentence does not erase the deprivation of liberty before judgment.

The verdict leaves Moussaoui outside prison, but still under the weight of a criminal conviction. For free-expression advocates, that distinction matters: a suspended sentence can continue to intimidate teachers, language activists and citizens who speak publicly about elections or public affairs.

The case also connects language work with civil rights. In Algeria, Tamazight is officially recognized, but activists continue to report gaps between recognition and the treatment of people who promote Amazigh language, culture and political expression in public life.
