A Town in Kabylie adds Tifinagh to Street Signs and Billboards

It took a long time but, it’s happening, now drive through parts of Larebɛa n Ayt Yiraten streets, a small town near Tizi Ouzzou in Kabylie, and you may notice streets name signs and town billboards being written in Tamazight Language in both Tifinagh and in latin alphabet.

This initiative is aiming to revive the use of Tamazight language script after being completely dominated for decades by the use of mainly Arab and French script in the region.

Changes will also include cities and towns names, as well as tourism destinations, including historic and natural sites in Tizi Ouzzou and surrounding areas in future.

Tifinagh is one of the oldest traditional writing system in the world used to write the Amazigh languages spoken in North Africa for centuries, the oldest evidence dates back to around 3000BC.
