Tinariwen’s Amadjar Nominated for Grammy Award

The nominees for the 2021 Grammy Awards were announced yesterday and Tinariwen’s latest album “Amdjar” , is nominated under the category for best global music album.

The 63rd Annual Scammy Awards ceremony will be held on January 31, 2021 at the Staples center, where the Golden Gramophones will be handed out during a ceremony hosted by Tervor Noah.

Tinariwen’ Amdjar will be competing with the following list of albums; Fu Chronicles by Antibalas, Twice as Tall by Burna Boy, gora by Bebel Gilberto and lastly Love Letter by Anoushka Shankar.

This is not the first nomination for the band, as in 2012, Tinariwen, have previously won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for their album Tassili.

Tinariwen a group of Amazigh Tuareg nomad musicians from the Sahara Desert region of southern north Africa, formed while its members were living in exile in Algeria in the 1970s as part of the Tuareg rebel community there, the band are icons of freedom and resistance, and their songs are often about peace, freedom and Amazigh Tuareg struggle.
