Algeria has opened the seventh edition of the President of the Republic Prize for Amazigh Literature and Language, giving writers, researchers and creators until November 7, 2026, to submit work through the dedicated digital platform.

The High Commission for Amazigh, the 2026 edition is open to candidates across several fields connected to Tamazight and Amazigh culture. The categories include Amazigh-language literature and works translated into Tamazight, linguistic research, research on intangible cultural heritage, and projects linked to technology and digitization.

The prize was created by presidential decree in 2020 and has become one of Algeria’s most visible official mechanisms for promoting Tamazight. It is designed not only as a literary award but also as a tool to encourage scholarship, documentation and digital development around Amazigh language and heritage.

This year’s awards ceremony is expected to take place in Tlemcen on January 12, 2027, during the official celebration of Yennayer 2977. The choice of Tlemcen follows the previous Yennayer celebration in Beni Abbes, where the sixth edition of the prize was part of national festivities marking the Amazigh New Year.

The 2026 call is also notable for its breadth. Algerie Confluences reported that participation is open to creators and researchers, including those under the age of 20, under the rules governing the prize. That could make the award a point of entry for younger writers and students who are beginning to work in Tamazight across literature, language technology and heritage studies.

For Amazigh cultural advocates, prizes cannot substitute for daily language use in schools, media and administration. But they can shape incentives, bring visibility to authors and researchers, and expand the archive of works available in the country’s Amazigh varieties. The digital category is particularly important as Tamazight continues to seek a stronger place in publishing tools, education platforms and online communication.
