According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of migrants who died trying to reach the shores of southern European countries reached an estimated of 2,262 in 2018.

Following the Rif protests back in 2017, Spain saw the most of irregular migrants traveling by sea, or via the country’s African enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta. surpassing Italy and Greece.

IOM’s Missing Migrants Project has also documented the deaths of 1,490 men, women and children seeking to cross the Mediterranean in 2018 – more than half of those deaths since 1 June 2018.
