Morocco has issued an official Amazigh translation of the meanings of the Qur’an in Tachelhit, a step being presented by Moroccan outlets and Amazigh advocates as a major institutional milestone for the language.

The edition was prepared by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Publishing the Holy Qur’an and described by Moroccan reports as a scientific and official translation overseen by a specialized committee. The project is intended to make Qur’anic meanings more accessible to Tachelhit speakers while keeping the Arabic Qur’anic text central in the printed edition.

Reports say the volume places the Arabic text opposite the Amazigh rendering and uses Arabic script for the Tachelhit translation, with vowel marking intended to aid pronunciation and comprehension. The approach also reflects a long Moroccan tradition in which Amazigh-speaking communities used local-language explanation to teach religious texts.

The announcement carries wider cultural significance because Tamazight has been an official language of Morocco since the 2011 constitution, yet its presence in formal public, educational and religious institutions has continued to expand unevenly. For Amazigh-language advocates, the translation is another test of whether official recognition is being turned into practical access.
