The University of Naples L’Orientale has launched a free beginner course in the Amazigh language for Italian speakers, according to a recent report listed by Amadal Amazigh.

The course is described as an A1-level introduction for learners with no prior background in the language. Amadal Amazigh reported that the program is being supported through joint funding from Italy’s research ministry and the university.

The initiative is notable because L’Orientale has long been one of Europe’s important centers for languages and area studies. Offering Amazigh at beginner level gives students in Italy a structured entry point into a language family that is central to North African history, migration, literature and contemporary identity politics.

For Amazigh communities in Europe, university courses can also help move the language beyond community transmission and activist spaces into formal academic settings. That shift matters for visibility, documentation and the creation of new learners who may later work in translation, research, education or cultural programming.

The course also reflects a broader European interest in North Africa that is no longer limited to Arabic or French. As Amazigh studies develops across universities, even introductory programs can help correct a long-standing imbalance in how the region’s linguistic landscape is taught.
