Escalating violence across the Sahel is putting renewed attention on northern Mali and the complicated battlefield relationship between the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front and the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM coalition.
New reporting based on ACLED data says militant violence in the Sahel is on track to reach record levels in 2026, with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger bearing much of the regional pressure.
Analysts at the Institute for Security Studies have focused specifically on the alliance between the Front for the Liberation of Azawad, known as the FLA, and JNIM. The two forces share opposition to Mali’s central authorities, but their political visions are not the same. The FLA comes out of Tuareg and Azawad-centered struggles, while JNIM is part of a jihadist network with broader ideological aims.
That tension has become more visible as attacks continue. A recent assault on a Malian military camp in Dioura was attributed to JNIM, while regional reporting noted the wider context of cooperation between JNIM and the FLA in earlier coordinated operations. Such cooperation can bring short-term battlefield advantages, but it also risks blurring the line between armed self-determination claims and jihadist insurgency.
For Tuareg civilians, the consequences are severe. Communities in northern and central Mali face military operations, jihadist violence, displacement, economic isolation, and pressure from competing armed actors. Any deepening of JNIM influence in areas associated with Azawad could further complicate international understanding of Tuareg political grievances.
The coming months will show whether the FLA can preserve a distinct political identity while operating in the same conflict environment as JNIM.
