New Mali Attacks Put Azawad Front Back in Spotlight

Recent attacks across Mali have put the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) back at the center of the country’s escalating security crisis, only days after rights groups warned of worsening abuses against civilians.

AP reported that Malian authorities said several northern towns, including Gao and Sevare, were targeted by rebel attacks. The FLA announced a new offensive around Anefis, a strategic town south of Kidal, and claimed control there, although AP noted that claim could not be independently verified.

Le Monde reported on July 7 that the FLA and Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked jihadist coalition, have developed a tactical relationship against Mali’s military junta and its Russian Africa Corps allies. The report described the cooperation as one of convenience rather than a settled ideological alliance.

For Tuareg and wider Amazigh communities, the situation is deeply complex. The FLA presents itself through the language of Azawad self-determination, while JNIM operates from a jihadist framework that many civilians fear. Their battlefield overlap risks reshaping international perceptions of northern Mali’s political conflict and may also expose civilians to harsher retaliation from state forces and foreign auxiliaries.

The renewed fighting follows months of instability in which Kidal, Gao, and other northern areas have repeatedly shifted in military importance. It also comes after reporting on abuses by all sides, including allegations against Malian forces, Russian-linked fighters, jihadist groups, and separatist fighters.

The immediate question is whether Anefis becomes another temporary flashpoint or a wider turning point in the balance between Bamako, Russian-backed forces, Tuareg-led armed groups, and jihadist factions. The humanitarian consequences for civilians in Azawad and surrounding regions remain the most urgent concern.
